with the University's mission, the Hall Director (HD) position
provides hall leadership in the University's residence halls. Hall
Directors invest in the lives of students and are leaders in the
hall community through presence, role modeling, and community
involvement. Hall Directors serve a key role in fostering community
within the residence halls, inspired and informed by the
University's Catholic and Holy Cross tradition of residentiality.
This position has primary responsibility for the wellbeing and
development of the students in the assigned residence hall.
Responsibilities include supervising an assistant hall director (a
graduate student) and a team of resident assistants (undergraduate
students).New HDs work full-time 39 weeks per year (late-July to
late-May). In addition to full-time benefits and retirement plan,
the University provides a furnished apartment within the assigned
residence hall with included utilities and amenities (internet,
laundry), as well as an academic-year meal plan, cell phone stipend
from August-May, parking pass, and professional development.This

DutiesCommunity Development
- Resides in assigned residence hall.
- Builds a culture of community and communal responsibility
within the assigned residence hall.
- Establishes rapport with residents, engages with them through
daily interactions, and provides a consistent presence as a role
model and information resource.
- Promotes the Holy Cross approach to residentiality where
individual hall identity is promoted and celebrated within the
context of the campus community. Fosters strong hall identity and
brand in all facets of the community. Works with students to create
and maintain strong hall traditions, alumni connections, and a
sense of belonging for residents.
- Supports and furthers the mission of the University by
attending and supervising the development, planning, and execution
of educational programming and vibrant community events within the
residence hall.
- Maintains knowledge and understanding of University policies
and procedures, educates students, and enforces regulations.
- Partners with the pastoral resident to provide faith
development guidance and support.
- Attends weekly celebration of Mass and assists with other
spiritual activities such as the annual hall retreat.
- Advises the coordinator/ambassador student leaders who work to
support the academic connections between the hall community and
University faculty.Student Development
- Assists students with academic, social, spiritual, and personal
needs or matters.
- Maintains knowledge of campus resources and referral channels
available to students.
- Provides direct support to students of concern, such as
students in situations of physical, emotional, or academic risk or
distress. Partners with colleagues in other University offices and
departments (including Care Team, Health Center, Wellness Center,
Campus Ministry, Shepard Academic Resource Center, and Campus
Safety) to assist students. Follow up with Care Team requests in a
timely manner.
- Mediates conflicts and resolve issues.
- Investigates incident reports and takes appropriate actions,
including discipline, as needed. Serves as a hearing officer for
student conduct related cases.Staff Development
- Supervises designated Assistant Hall Director and Resident
Assistants in the assigned residence hall. Coordinates staff
coverage schedules. Establishes expectations for performance and
provides feedback through performance evaluations. Addresses
performance concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinates the interviewing and staff selection process to
fill available vacancies.
- Participates in hall staff training activities, holds weekly
staff meetings, and designs in-hall specific orientation and
training for hall staff.Hall Operations & Administration
- Maintains regular on-call duty hours (in assigned residence
hall) in rotation with the assistant hall director and responds to
problems and concerns brought forward by students.
- Responds to and manages crisis situations through immediate
action, sound judgment, and appropriate referrals.
- Completes accurate and timely administrative reports and
paperwork.
- Acts as liaison with University resources such as Facilities
Services staff concerning the physical needs of the assigned
residence hall and with Campus Safety for any security
concerns.
- Oversees the stewardship of hall budget and finances.
- Each Assistant Hall Director is assigned a collateral task(s)
or assignment(s) in support of a student affairs function for
approximately 10 hours per week. These may include, but not limited
to, work in the areas of student conduct, student care, wellness,
campus ministry, retreats, campus safety, housing operations,
orientation, club sports, commuter student support, Center for
Gender and Sexuality support, or student leader hiring or training
functions.Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or
as assigned by supervisor or designee.Please note that the above

responsibility.Education & Experience
- Required: Bachelor's Degree.
- Preferred: Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Student
Affairs, Pastoral Ministry or Divinity, or a related field.
- Preferred: Relevant experience working in student affairs or
student services; experience in conflict and dispute
resolution/mediation; and experience in residence life (having
previously served in a live-in hall staff role).
- Preferred: Experience as a supervisor or peer leader.
- Or a combination of equivalent education and/or
experience.Certifications & Licenses

- Knowledge of or ability to learn, respect, and support the
structure, mission, and values of the University of Portland and
the tradition of the Holy Cross.
- Demonstrated ability to work and build rapport with college-age
students in university residence halls or in ministry of young
adults.
