The process control equipment developed and manufactured by KLA, each referred to as a "tool," is highly complex. Technical Support Engineers (TSEs) most often are deployed to a customer site when a KLA tool is non-operational due to a malfunction. Because a malfunction of a KLA tool impacts the customer's production until the tool is operational again, immediate deployment of TSEs to analyze the malfunction and implement a solution is extremely important.

In locals where the volume of tools installed at customer sites is sufficiently high in number, KLA employs Customer Support Engineers (CSEs) locally to perform regular preventative maintenance on the KLA tools. The local CSE also is able to support some corrective maintenance on KLA tools. More complicated and infrequent corrective maintenance procedures may require a more highly skilled TSE to address the problem. A TSE is a technical expert with specialized proprietary knowledge of KLA tools and a higher degree of proficiency than a CSE in troubleshooting and correcting the most complex tool problems. TSEs have more training and a higher KLA certification (Level 4 or 5) than most CSEs. CSEs who work locally in a single customer fab typically see the most complex problems infrequently, so are unable to develop or maintain proficiency in addressing those issues. TSEs gain a deeper knowledge of and higher proficiency in addressing the most complex issues because they routinely are called in to troubleshoot, diagnose and determine the corrective steps needed to address the most technical/complex problems on KLA tools. TSEs are called upon to aid local CSEs when the complexity is beyond the capability of the local CSE.

TSEs provide technical support to local CSEs following an escalation procedure, as follows:

Step 1: If a CSE has difficulty addressing a technical issue, the CSE may contact a TSE for a higher level of technical support.

Step 2: The TSE will first attempt to diagnose the technical issue and provide a plan of corrective action remotely for the CSE to perform at the customer site.

Step 3: If the technical issue cannot be addressed remotely, then a TSE will travel to the customer site to inspect the KLA tool to further diagnose and address the technical issue.

Main tasks:

* Applies advanced technical knowledge to inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, modify, and correct failures of highly complex semiconductor metrology and inspection capital equipment. * Conducts advance technical testing of software and hardware failures on KLA tools. * Analyzes and diagnoses technical failures of complex problems on KLA tools. * Determines the technical plan of action to achieve the required operational level for a KLA tools. * Guides and/or assists CSEs in implementing the necessary corrective measures to achieve the required operational level for KLA tools.

Key competencies:

* High level of technical competencies in engineering, with particular competencies in mechanical, optical, laser, metrology and lithography. * Expert knowledge of KLA proprietary tools and products. * Advanced analytical capability to troubleshoot complex problems and determine the technical plan of action for addressing such issues.

Master's Level Degree , Bachelor's Level Degree and work experience of 3 years
