Department Overview
The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC or "Primate Center") conducts world-class basic and translational biomedical research in its five scientific divisions: Cardiometabolic Health, Genetics, Reproductive & Developmental Sciences, Neuroscience, and Pathobiology & Immunology. All scientific divisions work closely with the Division of Animal Resources & Research Support (ARRS), which oversees the care and well-being of all nonhuman primates and other laboratory animals maintained at ONPRC. The ONPRC sponsors a number of shared facilities that provide core services focused on nonhuman primate research to the ONPRC and its collaborating scientists. The Primate Center is home to over 5,000 non-human primates and is one of seven non-human primate research facilities in the U.S., and is one of the largest and most prestigious centers.
The director of the ONPRC oversees research and operations for the center, which is located at OHSU's West Campus. The West Campus also houses the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute and a state-of-the-art OHSU Data Center, managed by OHSU's Information Technology Group. The director leads all strategic, functional, administrative, and fiscal aspects of the center, in coordination with the associate directors and division chiefs and under the direction of the Executive Vice President and Chief Research Officer.
Function/Duties of Position
The principal role of the director is to lead and manage the ONPRC and set the overarching strategy. This individual is also expected to:

• Serve as an advocate for the center both internally and externally and foster collaborations nationally to support the mission of the center as a national resource
  
• Maintain the prominent and highly respected reputation of the ONPRC
  
• Encourage interdisciplinary and cross-unit research initiatives, particularly with the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, and across other units in OHSU, as well as nationally
  
• Assess center needs and recruit and hire faculty members
  
• Work with division chiefs and associate directors on mentorship, evaluation, and promotion of faculty and staff
  
• Work with associate directors, Chief Research Officer, OHSU finance and administrative leadership on fiscal and administrative matters pertaining to the center
  
• Nurture the relationships with ONPRC's colleagues, researchers (faculty and staff), NIH, and other primate centers
  
• Lead strategic planning efforts which include proposal for the five-year renewal of the P51 core grant every five years, as well as the longer-term scientific direction for the center within the overall strategic initiatives of OHSU
  
• Work with OHSU administration to lead campus planning to build out the campus according to the Master Plan
  
• Have a highly regarded, funded research program and remain active in research during their tenure as director
  
• Serve as an advocate for the ONPRC both within the University and externally at the local, state, and national levels
  
• Increase the size of the colony and further expand the physical infrastructure of the center to meet increasing demand for nonhuman primate research and the growing team of researchers
  
• Promote animal welfare through the use of clinical and basic science research and educate the national public on non-human primate research
  
• Serve as a regional and national resource and center of excellence for biomedical research
  
  Required Qualifications
  
  • 
    
  • Ph.D. or DVM
    
  • Strong research and publishing record
    
  • Experienced and outstanding leader and scientist
    
  • Demonstrated record of success in obtaining research funding and be a highly visible, national expert in their areas of expertise
    
  • Participation in training and program project grants
    
  • Senior-level administrative experience, preferably in an educational/research setting, and a collaborative, collegial, and open approach to administration
    
    Preferred Qualifications
    
    • 
      
    • National reputation as an outstanding non-human primate researcher and operational leader, and will have an active research program
      
    • Demonstrated interest in building collaborative research programs
      
    • Interest in furthering the public's understanding of the Center's research mission and contributions to improvements to public health
