The is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

Function/Duties of Position

The Assistant Facilities Technician will provide assistance and support to journeyman level trades workers by performing a wide variety of semiskilled and unskilled tasks. Inspect, maintain, and repair facilities and building-related systems and equipment at the Oregon National Primate Research Center. Tasks, in such areas as plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC, carpentry, painting, building maintenance and automotive maintenance, are usually routine in nature and limited in difficulty. The work may be under the guidance of a skilled tradesperson, or may be performed independently when performing routine work and minor repairs. Perform assignments on the basis of emergency calls, work orders, routine, preventive and major maintenance biweekly schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of facilities maintenance or trades related experience or successful completion of a Facilities Maintenance technical training program
  • Basic computer skills
  • Read and follow oral and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively and clearly in both oral and written form
  • Familiarity with computer keyboard and general office practices and equipment preferred
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to drive ONPRC vehicles on and off campus
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs
  • Ability to work in security controlled labs and animal areas with potential exposure to hazardous materials, smells, dust, fumes, inclement weather, climbing, stooping, heavy lifting and working at heights and around construction and operating equipment
  • Ability to work in areas where there is risk of exposure to zoonotic agents by direct contact with animals or their tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids
  • Requires the ability to work where there is risk of exposure to biological, potentially hazardous chemicals and sanitizing chemicals may be require staff to wear a face mask or respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Work is performed in all seasons, both indoors and outdoors
  • Work may involve exposure hazardous items such as steam pipes, electrical wiring, icy roofs, and power machines and tools
  • Work in cramped, uncomfortable places such as behind large equipment or on roofs, and may involve moving on wet and/or slick surfaces, through narrow corridors, climbing stairs, prolonged periods of standing, and work on high ladders
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with tools and equipment of various trades
    • Ability to operate equipment necessary to support the facilities, such as various types of welding units, sheet-metal presses and brakes, power tools, test meters, and a variety of hand tools and precision measuring instruments; commercial air conditioners, fan units, gas-pack units, chillers, freezers, evaporators, oilers, cage washing equipment, pumps, motors, temperature control devices, low-voltage motor or relay controls, roofs, air vents, door locks, and building structures
    • Ability to work with, read and interpret shop drawings, sketches, blueprints, and diagrams
